Activated carbon filter cartridges type “EPS”

Activated carbon filters are used where mechanical filtration alone is no longer sufficient for the dissolved substances as these are only of molecular size and much too small for the very large pores. Excess chlorine or, for example, disinfectant ozone react with the activated charcoal and are neutralized. Odorous substances are fully bound by the activated carbon and can no longer escape.

Activated carbons are differentiated depending on their raw material source (e.g. hard coal or plant residue such as coconut) and their delivery format (pellets, blocks, granulate, powder). The individual requirements of the customer determine in which type and form activated carbon can be used most effectively.

The activated carbon filter cartridges type “EPS” use an activated coconut coal block. The homogeneous activated carbon block and the associated constant adsorption action across the entire activated carbon block make block activated carbon predestined for the use of air and gases.

Description

General information/design

The activated carbon for the filter cartridges type “EPS” is made from the natural product coconut. Coconut shells are a fast growing raw material. The plant parts are coked, i.e. cellulose in the plants is converted into carbon. Fine carbon dust is mixed with a binding agent and sintered into a cylindrical shape under pressure and at high temperature. This produces a homogeneous, porous carbon block which is very dense. The adsorption and the efficiency are constant across the entire activated carbon filter cartridge type “EPS”. A fine filter nonwoven is provided before and after the activated carbon block which counteracts contamination.

A large, grippy polypropylene net covers the outside, providing secure fixing of the pre-filtration nonwoven to protect the activated carbon block against cracks caused by impact.

The large active surface is based on the pore structure of the original cell walls of the plants. Very large pores with long, tubular channels are typical for the molecule situation. The air content in these pores is very high, which has to be taken into account during flushing or filtration. Due to the channel structure, the contact time also has to be longer or the flow rate of the liquid has to be reduced. The liquid or air flows through the activated carbon filter cartridges type “EPS” radially from outside to inside.

These cartridge filters are often used in air flows to combat unpleasant odors or for excessive, highly volatile disinfectants such as ozone. Due to its strength, the porous activated carbon block is ideal for gas and air as less coarse dirt accumulates which could settle on the intake surface. In addition to this, no flow channels will form even at high gas flow rates, as would be the case with granulate.

Certificates

The activated carbon can be used for food without any restrictions.

All components have been certified by the American National Sanitization Foundation (NSF) as per the regulations of ANSI/NSF standard 42 and are therefore suitable for use in food in the USA.

Adapters

The end caps are bonded to the activated carbon block and cannot be removed. Due to the risk of breakage of longer activated carbon blocks, the carbon filters type “EPS” are only sold from stock up to a length of 9 3/4″. On customer request, however, a 20″ length can also be provided.

NOTE: As a rule, all types of activated carbon filter cartridges must be flushed initially until the liquid is visibly clean. In addition, the adsorption capacity and useful life of activated carbon filter cartridges is significantly improved through upstream filter cartridges with mechanical filtration action.
