Filter bags

Putsch® filter bags are a widely used filter medium for many applications. Putsch® filter bags are usually equipped with a metal or polypropylene tension ring which holds the top opening of the bag filter open so the liquid to be filtered can flow through. One advantage of filter bags: the dirt remains inside the filter and the filter change removes the dirt at the same time – the filtrate side of the bag remains clean!

Our customers mostly use these advantages for paints, varnishes and chemicals, but also for food. As much less cleaning of the housing is required, filter bags mean that flushing chemicals can be reduced or omitted altogether. This facilitates or enables compliance with many hygiene regulations in the food industry.

Description

General information/design

Putsch® filter bags consist of fabric (surface filtration), needle felt (depth filtration) or microfiber as an effective filter matrix.

Surface filtration

Particles which are too large cannot pass through the mesh openings. They remain on the intake surface and the liquid flows through the mesh filtered.

Depth filtration

In the needle felt, the dirt particles are not only retained on the surface but also inside the fiber filter matrix.

The depth filtration action is strongly dependent on the thickness of the filter matrix, while the thickness of fabrics has no influence on the filter action.

For this reason, Putsch® additionally offers thicker filter media for the depth filters (“Extra Life”), increasing filter action and service life.

Microfiber filtration

To achieve the benefits of the defined filter action with fabrics and the higher flow rate with needle felt, microfibers are used which have significantly finer fibers than needle felt and therefore a denser and more even filter matrix, coming close to a very fine fabric. The microfiber matrix is still a depth filter and has the benefit of a longer useful life than fabrics while increasing the service life. It is manufactured with the melt blown process which melts microfibers together at the contact points – without using adhesives and therefore without fibers shedding into the filtrate.

For decades, filter bags were sewn along the lengthwise seam and the sealing ring, which resulted in the needle holes sometimes being bigger than the indicated filter grade of the bag, allowing larger particles to bypass into the filtrate. Today, filter bags from Putsch® are thermally sealed and therefore sealed for any grade – including at the seam, which is particularly important for grades below 100 µm! The only exceptions to fully bonded filter bags are filter bags made of fabric or materials which cannot be bonded with ultrasonic welding. These filter bags are practical for use in larger filtration tasks from 100 µm, where the holes made by the sewing needle are smaller than the filter grade of the filter bag. At least, this applies exclusively to all sewn filter bags from Putsch®.

The filter bags have a sealing ring at the opening to prevent a bypass in the bag housing. Different materials and profiles are available, depending on chemicals, temperature and any special bag housings.

On sewn filter bags with a polypropylene sealing ring, the sealing ring is never sewn on but always thermally bonded to provide 100 % sealing.

Two diameters have prevailed on the international market: 102 mm and 180 mm; there are 2 standard bag lengths for each of these two widths. This results in a range of four different filter bag sizes, representing the worldwide standard. This ensures that the Putsch® filter bag sizes 1 to 4 precisely fit into all standard bag housings and seal accordingly.

The features of the filter bags at a glance:

– Filter media are available in needle felt, fabric and microfiber
– Sewn seams or seams bonded with ultrasound – both processes are available
– Sealing rings made from various polypropylenes or metals available in two different diameters
– All Putsch® filter bags correspond to the 4 worldwide standard sizes and fit into all common bag housings

Putsch® offers a wide range of filter bags – from economic standard bags made of polypropylene or Nylon®, “Extra Life” depth filter bags and high performance filter bags, e.g. “absolute” filter bags, and a variety of customized solutions.

Over 90 % of all customers are fine with the standard bags from Putsch® and do not have to spend more money on special bags. Putsch® bag filters made of polypropylene needle felt or Nylon® fabric are absolutely sufficient for the majority of all applications.

Polypropylene is resistant to acids and lyes, for example, suitable for use with food and free from silicones. Nylon® can be used up to approx. 135 °C, it is resistant to most solvents and also suitable for use with food.

These properties make Putsch® standard bags the most obvious and economical solution for almost all filter applications.

Depending on the conditions such as temperature, chemical resistance, dirt volume, etc., the operating company decides on the material or the filter matrix. If both materials – polypropylene and Nylon® – are to be used, Nylon® fabrics are the right selection from a filter grade of 100 µm. Below 100 µm, polypropylene needle felt offers the best price-performance ratio. As an alternative to the standard bags, Putsch® offers the “Extra Life” filter bags for a longer useful life, the “absolute” filter bags with increased filtration action or customized filters with special shapes and dimensions.

Standard filter bags made from needle felt (polypropylene)

All Putsch® filter bags made from polypropylene needle felt are perfectly sufficient for the majority of applications. Polypropylene can be used in the entire pH range.

They are intended for contact with food.

They are also free from silicones and there is no risk of contaminations for the coating industry.

The filter bags adsorb oil, so that Putsch® filter bags can also be used in combination with lubricated pumps.

All seams are bonded with ultrasound and sealed. On request, a metal ring can be sewn in instead of the welded-on polypropylene sealing ring (PL ring) and the lengthwise seam is also sewn. For high shear forces and higher temperatures this makes the filter bags particularly tear-proof.

All outer surfaces of the Putsch® filter bags are calendered to exclude the risk of fiber migration. This prevents the fine polypropylene fibers from entering into the filtered liquid.

As an alternative to polypropylene needle felt, Putsch® also offers polyester filter bags as a standard. Polyester has a higher temperature resistance than polypropylene and is popular for use with certain organic solvents.

Standard fabric filter bags (Nylon® )

Nylon® can be used without problems up to approx. 135 °C and is particularly resistant to solvents.

They are approved for the food industry, but not very widely used, because most customers filter below 100 µm and therefore tend to use polypropylene products (particles are visible to the naked eye already from a size of 50 µm and affect the appearance of pure food products).

They are also free from silicones and there is no risk of contaminations for the coating industry.

The filtration action of Putsch® fabric filter bags is precisely defined by the filter matrix with evenly sized mesh openings. Only particles which are smaller than the selected mesh size may pass through the filter fabric. For paint, of course, the small pigments have to pass through the mesh! “Not as fine as possible – only as fine as necessary!”

The Nylon® fabric is made up of monofilament threads which consist of one skein and cannot shed any fibers. The thread is particularly tear-resistant and can withstand high pressure. The crucial advantage of Putsch® filter bags is the smooth surface. This allows the Nylon® fabric to be washed and reused again and again, depending on the properties of the liquid and the contamination.

A polyester fabric is also available instead of the Nylon® fabric.

Standard filter bags made from needle felt “Extra Life”

To achieve a longer useful life, the filter bags are offered as depth filters with even thicker material – “Extra Life”. Putsch® recommends that customers carry out trials to find out if these bags are the right choice under their individual conditions.
The “Extra Life” filter bags are also a standard product at Putsch®.

High performance filter bags

If an even higher filtration action (e.g. “absolute” filter bags) or filter bags with custom dimensions, designs or materials for special requirements are needed, please have a look a the Putsch® high performance filter bags:

Putsch® offers filter bags in all common materials.
The same materials can be used in different thicknesses to extend the service life – e.g. filter bags for dirt particles or oil-adsorbing polypropylene filter bags.

Each filter bag can be manufactured with different layers of a specific grade (multi-layer) to achieve a longer useful life.
Instead of needle felt, microfibers can be selected to increase the filtration action.

Putsch® offers customized filter bags for customers who do not use bag housings in standard sizes.

Putsch® offers reinforced seams for special application conditions.

Putsch® offers the reproduction of special bags from other suppliers.

Of course, tie strings can be used instead of the rings. Loops for removing the filter bags are also possible.

Putsch® can also offer individual packaging for each filter bag or special labeling.

Putsch® sees itself as a service provider – generating the best possible product solution in a dialog with the customer and manufacturing it if an order is placed.

In practical application, however, the Putsch® standard filter bags are usually sufficient and most special requests can be covered by the high performance filter bags.
