Activated carbon filter cartridge type “PA-G”

Putsch® offers a comprehensive range of different activated carbon filter cartridges. These are used where mechanical filtration alone is no longer sufficient for the dissolved substances as these are only of molecular size.

Activated carbons are differentiated depending on their raw material source (e.g. hard coal or plant residue such as coconut) and their delivery format (pellets, blocks, granulate, powder). The individual requirements of the customer determine in which type and form activated carbon can be used most effectively. These filter cartridges use activated carbon from coal as a natural product. Coal adsorbs many dissolved substances from liquids which can otherwise not be filtrated mechanically. The adsorption action of activated carbon binds dissolved substances such as oil, grease, pesticides, colorants and other organic compounds from liquids to enable their removal.

Excess chlorine or, for example, disinfectant ozone react with the activated charcoal and are neutralized. Odorous substances are fully bound by the activated carbon and can no longer escape. Once bitterns have been adsorbed by activated carbon, they can no longer contaminate food. As a result, activated charcoal has become a staple in the food industry. In electroplating, activated carbon is used very effectively to remove interfering organic compounds from various baths.

The loose filling means that the initial differential pressures are low, providing the long service life.

Description

General information/design

The activated carbon cartridge filters type “PA-G” use activated carbon from specially activated coal. Coal adsorbs all dissolved substances from liquids which can otherwise not be filtrated mechanically. The adsorption property is based on electro-kinetic processes and improves as the available surface increases.

The high efficiency of the activated carbon surface is due to it pore structure. As carbon is amorphous, however, and has no own suitable structure, the pores are burned deep into the coal using hot steam and precisely dosed oxygen in a labyrinth pattern. This “steam activation” creates a vast inner surface in the coal which provides an extraordinary adsportion capacity.

The large molecules adsorb mostly on the outer surfaces, while the smaller molecules can primarily be found inside the charcoal. The inner labyrinth structure of the coal as well as the different pore channels support this size distribution of the molecules from outside to inside, allowing a particularly long useful life.

The hardness of coal has the advantage that it can be pressed into dimensionally stable pellets without adding adhesives. The activated carbon consists of 100 % hard coal.

The special hardness of the pellets prevents abrasion of fine dust, providing a particularly short running-in time, which makes these activated carbon filter cartridges type “PA-G” particularly effective and economically viable.

The activated carbon filter cartridges type “PA-G” stand out on account of the particularly efficient coal and the dimensionally stable pellets as well as their structured design.

These cartridge filters are filled with pellets through which the respective medium flows with a low flow resistance while the unwanted molecules are adsorbed. The open structure of a loose filling decreases the stagnation pressure, ensuring a longer useful life than, for example, a dense block of activated charcoal powder.

A polyethylene filter layer is installed before and after the filling, holding the filling together while also retaining dirt and therefore supporting effective filtration of the liquid.

The liquid flows through the filter cartridges radially from outside to inside. The large intake surface ensures a particularly long useful life. All parts used are mode polyethylene or polypropylene, making the filter elements inert to acid and lye, which means they are also suitable for filtration of electroplating chemicals. Even the end caps are permanently bonded with melted polypropylene and free from solvents or chemical adhesives.

Certificates

The carbon can be used for food without restrictions as
it is already only harmless coal as a raw material.

Steam activation is a gentle process and does not change the chemical composition of coal, but rather creates only an enormous adsorption strength through the gained porosity.

No substances that could interfere with adhesion, e.g. silicones, are permitted in surface coating systems, among others. All components are free from silicone.

The filter cartridges are manufactured at the Hagen plant in compliance with all strict national and international regulations.

Adapters

Most filter cartridges are used in customer applications in the version with both ends open (DOE).
The caps are permanently attached, so the activated carbon cannot be replaced. These adapters are suitable for cartridge housings with cutting edges and typical for polypropylene cartridge housings. Additional adapters are available with O-rings which are permanently attached at the Hagen plant.

NOTE: As a rule, all types of activated carbon filter cartridges must be flushed initially until the liquid is visibly clean. In addition, the adsorption capacity and useful life of activated carbon filter cartridges is significantly improved through upstream filter cartridges with mechanical filtration action.
