String-wound filter cartridges

Putsch® offers a comprehensive range of different activated carbon filter cartridges. Activated carbon filters are used where mechanical filtration alone is not sufficient for the dissolved substances – molecules – as the very large pores cannot retain the tiny molecules.
The adsorption action of activated carbon binds dissolved substances such as oil, grease, pesticides, colorants and other organic compounds from liquids to enable their removal from the liquid.
Excess chlorine or, for example, disinfectant ozone react with the activated charcoal and are neutralized. Odorous substances are fully bound by the activated carbon and can no longer escape.
Activated carbons are differentiated depending on their raw material source (e.g. hard coal or plant residue such as coconut) and their delivery format (pellets, blocks, granulate, powder). The individual requirements of the customer determine in which type and form activated carbon can be used most effectively.
The activated carbon filter cartridges type “GAC” are filled with activated coconut coal granulate.
The activated carbon for the filter cartridges type “GAC” is made from the natural product coconut. Coconut shells are a fast growing raw material. The plant parts are coked under exclusion of air. The cellulose of the plant cell walls is converted into carbon.
The large active surface is based on the pore structure of the original cell structure of the plants. Very large pores with long, tubular channels are typical for the molecule situation. The air content in these pores is very high, which has to be taken into account during flushing or filtration. Due to the channel structure, the contact time also has to be longer or the flow rate of the liquid has to be reduced.
The open structure of the granulate allows lower dynamic pressure and therefore provides a longer service life – a great advantage over a dense activated carbon block made of activated carbon powder with adhesives, as used in other activated carbon filters.
The activated carbon filter cartridges type “GAC” have a structure which causes the granulate to flow through lengthwise and ensures that the contact time is correspondingly long. The liquid enters through the lateral slots on one cap and flows through the granulate, causing the dissolved foreign substances to be adsorbed by the activated carbon. Then the filtrate is emitted at the inner edge of the other cap.
A polypropylene filter layer is located before and after the granulate to retain the granulate, the fine abrasion and larger dirt particles, allowing effective filtration of the liquid.
The activated carbon can be used for food without any restrictions.
All components have been certified by the American National Sanitization Foundation (NSF) as per the regulations of ANSI/NSF standard 42 and are therefore suitable for use in food in the USA.
The liquid flows through the filter cartridges tangentially from one cap to the opposite cap. The end caps are bonded to the filter cartridge cylinder and can therefore not be removed.
These activated carbon filter cartridges type “GAC” have been designed for special polypropylene cartridge filter housings. Putsch® offers the polypropylene cartridge housings type “SM”, “SL” and “BB” for this.
The activated carbon filter cartridges type “GAC” are accordingly available in two lengths: In 9 3/4″ and 20″, depending on the cartridge housing.
In addition to the usual filter cartridges with an outer diameter of 73 mm, Putsch® offers activated carbon filter cartridges with an external diameter of 114 mm. These contain clearly more activated carbon which significantly extends the service life.

NOTE: As a rule, all types of activated carbon filter cartridges must be flushed initially until the liquid is visibly clean. In addition, the adsorption capacity and useful life of activated carbon filter cartridges is significantly improved through upstream filter cartridges with mechanical filtration action.

Housings type “SM”, “SL” and “PN” are polypropylene cartridge housings for use as water filters, each with individual filter cartridges. Their low weight makes them ideal for mobile use.
Cartridge housings type “BB” are made of polypropylene filter housings designed for filter cartridges with a larger diameter which have particularly long service lives.
Putsch® activated carbon filter cartridges type “PA-G” are equipped with steam-activated coal pellets and specially designed for strongly contaminated liquids.
Putsch® activated carbon filter cartridges type “EPS” are made with activated coconut coal as a block and therefore particularly suitable for air and gas purification.
